Architects in Balham

Balham has spent the last fifteen years shifting from a stop on the way to somewhere else into a destination in its own right, and a lot of that shows up in how homeowners are extending their houses rather than moving on from them. Design United Studio, led by director Jürgen Kuppers, works with that same ambition on projects across the area.

Designed for Families Staying Put, Not Moving On

Why So Many Balham Extensions Are Loft Conversions

Balham's Victorian terraces typically have steep-pitched roofs, which usually gives enough headroom for a loft conversion without needing to raise the roofline significantly.

That makes it one of the most common ways local families add a bedroom without the upheaval of moving house.

Every roof still needs checking individually though, pitch, existing headroom and the structure below all vary from one terrace to the next, even on the same street.

Getting the Technical Side of a Loft Conversion Right

A loft conversion has to meet requirements covering fire escape routes, staircase headroom and the structural loading of a new floor or staircase, particularly where that load bears onto a party wall shared with a neighbour.

Extending a Home Near Balham's Conservation Streets

Some streets in Balham sit within a conservation area, which changes what can be altered without planning permission, particularly on the front of a property. We check this with Wandsworth Council, the local planning authority for Balham, as one of the first steps on any project.

From First Flat to Forever Home

A lot of our Balham enquiries come from people who bought a flat or a small terrace here in their twenties and never quite left.

As families grow, the instinct is often to move, but a loft conversion combined with a rear extension can genuinely turn a starter home into a long-term one without a house move.

Balancing a Small Footprint With a Growing Household

Balham's plots tend to be modest rather than generous, which makes layout decisions matter more than square footage alone. A well-placed side return or a loft conversion that adds a bedroom without eating into the rooms below usually does more for a Balham house than a larger, less considered extension would.

What Our Clients Say

"We'd been putting off the loft conversion for years because the building regs side felt overwhelming. They made it feel manageable within a couple of conversations."

"We bought our flat five years ago and never thought we'd still be here, let alone extending it for a second child. Turns out we didn't need to move after all."

"Balham gardens aren't huge, and they still managed to make the extension feel bigger than the space it actually took up."
